The Big Buddy program is a one-on-one mentoring program that matches at-risk youth ages 6 to 16 in New Hanover County with positive adult role models. Youth are identified as at-risk due to the following circumstances: involvement with the juvenile justice system, excessive in-school and out-of-school suspensions, poor academic performance and lack of a positive role model. Volunteers are always needed to mentor youth. Volunteers are asked to spend two hours a week with their buddy for a minimum of one year. Activities can include going to the beach, helping with homework, going to the grocery store, going to church. Three weeks out of the month the Big Buddy plans the event, the fourth week the program staff plans an event like Big Buddy Bowling, Rockin' Roller Skating, Free Concerts at Mayfaire with a cookout and more.
