Sand and surf are the main attractions in Wrightsville Beach and Figure Eight Island, N.C. Clean, wide, uncrowded beaches are perfect for swimming, surfing, walking and relaxing. Serene Figure Eight Island is the place to unwind while Wrightsville Beach offers more adventure.
Years ago, trolleys carried revelers to Wrigthsville Beach and a huge pavilion there named the Lumina. Back then, decked-out adults danced to big band music while bathing-suit-clad kids watched movies on the beach. The Lumina is gone, but the beach remains a happy playground. Nowadays, most people ride bikes or walk the Loop, a fitness trail that circles the inner island. The area’s year-round mild weather means that outdoor activities rule in Wrightsville Beach. Sail from one of Wrightsville’s fine marinas or paddle a kayak through serene marshes where majestic shorebirds glide overhead. Kiteboarders, parasailors, and especially surfers relish pristine beaches. Fishing and boating are huge here, but tennis, volleyball, and soccer are also available in Wrightsville Beach Park.
History buffs soak up the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History, housed in a turn-of-the-century cottage containing vintage furnishings and a scale model of Wrightsville Beach’s Lumina days. Volunteer Opportunities offer a feel-good vibe no matter the cause.
