The two-unit, 1,875-MW Brunswick Nuclear Plant is located near Southport. An additional 244 megawatts of electrical generation was added to this plant's output from 2002 to 2005 as part of an extended power update program that upgraded much of the equipment. Intern and co-op vacancies are posted on the website during peak campus recruiting seasons: September-October for internship opportunities and fall as well as spring for co-ops. Community colleges are an integral part of supplying the Progress Energy workforce with power plant operators, maintenance technicians, line technicians and welders.
